As Steve and David have both said the electronic shift motor is a problematic
area, it can be taken apart and cleaned if you're handy with doing such. (Of
course if you're unsuccessful you're no worse off then you were..) Personally
I much prefer a mechanical linkage for my 4 by 4 operation; I can feel the
engagement and know if the linkage has come apart or needs adjustment BEFORE I
get stuck! ;-)

Well... what would be the price be for all the sensors and actuators etc. in
the computer system come to for used parts? Might be an interesting
comparison. Could be like getting an engine for free if you look at it that
way.

I'm not in your area so I can't say if the price is fair or not but a few
phone calls to some junkyards in your area could probably give you a clue. My
suggestion (if you're up to the task) would be to get a complete engine that
isn't in as good a shape for less money and use the savings to rebuild it
yourself. Of course you can just have this engine on hand and swap it in when
the original fails and it should buy you some time to rebuild (or have
rebuilt) the first one...
