I'd rather not remove them from the Y pipe, I just want to remove the heads.

All 6 bolts are out.

Steve,

Take it from me, the guy who broke eight bolts on the installation of headers to
his 1988 2.9. Just pull those two bolts on each manifold that connects them to
the Y pipe. They are of a larger size, easier to get at, and will make this job
a lot less difficult.

Oh, and please coat the threads with anti-sieze when you get everything back in.
